Leave Policy

Maternity Leave

Employees who have worked continuously for 6 months are entitled to 70 days of paid vacation. The employee receives an amount depending on the level of his salary during this period and the social security is responsible for this remuneration.

You can use the leave module in IceHrm to manage maternity leave in Jordan.

Paternity Leave

Employees are entitled to 3 days of paid paternity leave. The 3 days must be taken before the birth of the child. The employee receives 100% of his salary during this period and the employer is responsible for this compensation.

Parental Leave

Parental leave is not regulated by law in Jordan. However, employees may be entitled to maternity and paternity leave.

Sick Leave

Employees are entitled to up to 14 days of paid sick leave, 100% paid by the employer. Workers are also entitled to an additional 14 days if they are in hospital. The employee is entitled to 50% payment of the additional sick leave from the employer.

Pay & Tax

Minimum Wage Requirements

In Jordan, the monthly minimum wage varies depending on whether the worker is a national of the country or not:

  • 260 JOD per month, for Jordanian workers
  • 230 JOD per month, for other nationalities

Individual Income Tax

Individual income tax is between 5% and 30%. Income tax is calculated at progressive rates.

Payroll Cost

Employer costs are generally estimated at 14.25% of employee salary.

  • Social security – employer contribution – 14.25%

Please note: The maximum monthly salary for calculating social security contributions is 3,394 JOD.

One-off costs:

Signing the printed employee agreement – 56.75 JOD

Overtime Pay & Maximum Hours

The standard working hours are 8 hours per day and 40 hours per week. However, the working week can be extended to 6 days and 48 hours per week.

The normal working week lasts from Sunday to Thursday.

Termination

Termination Requirements

Terminations in Jordan can be complicated. In Jordan, employers cannot terminate at their own discretion outside of the probationary period and the termination must be for a valid reason.

Compliant terminations include:

  • Voluntary by the employee
  • By mutual agreement
  • Unilaterally by the employer due to:
    1. Probation period
    2. Objective reasons
    3. Disciplinary dismissal
    4. Performance due to unsuitability for the position
  • When the contract expires

Notice Period

The notice period is 30 days. The type of notice determines the type of notice required.

Severance for Employees

The amount of the severance payment depends on the type of contract, the reasons for termination and the duration of the employment relationship. Employees with a permanent contract are entitled, upon termination of the employment relationship, to a monthly salary for each year in which they have worked, as well as to a pro-rata payment for fractions of a year.

There is no severance payment during the probationary period.

Statutory Time Off

Paid Time Off

Full-time employees are entitled to 14 working days of paid time off per year. The number of PTO days and the amount of hearing varies depending on the length of service. Employees are entitled to annual leave in the first year based on the months they have worked. Part-time employees receive a pro rata share of the number of hours they work per week.

If an employee’s employment relationship is terminated for any reason before he or she has used up his or her annual leave, he or she is entitled to his or her remuneration for all remaining days of leave.

Onboarding

The training takes 7 working days. Compliance documents must be completed 2 days prior to the start date and a wet ink copy of the agreement is required for enrollment.

Employment Contract Details

The contracts must be written in Arabic and can be bilingual. They must be in writing and signed by both parties.

A contract must contain:

  • Surname
  • Start date
  • Duration of employment
  • Job Description
  • Termination conditions
  • Job title
  • Duration of the contract
  • Basic salary
  • working hours
  • Day off

Probation Period

The probationary period is mandatory. The minimum probation period is 30 days and the maximum probation period is 90 days.
