Workplace Evolution: A Decade of Change and New Realities
What has changed in your life in the last ten years? Without knowing you or your life, I can confidently predict your answer: A lot! Ten years is always a long time, but in an era of ever-improving technologies, the last decade has seen an unusual amount of change.That's exactly why we have some questions and survey results from this year Compiled in 2006 on HR-related topics and compared with today's answers.
A lot has certainly changed in the last decade - but how have the issues that really matter to employees and employers changed? For example, has the work environment improved? Do employees believe that they are managed better today than they were back then? And are people more or less stressed than they were ten years ago? This survey revealed the answers to these and many other questions.
In 2006, more than half of employers reported monitoring their employees' emails. In 2016, that number fell to 29 percent. Ironically, at a time when the NSA has more power to search our emails, employers often don't do this. This likely speaks to greater employee trust and autonomy.
Employers are doing a better job of making employees feel like they're on the right track. The number of employees who either agree or strongly agree that they have career development opportunities with their current employer has increased by 14 percent over the past decade. In addition, 21 percent more say they would prefer their current job to a comparable position at another company.

In 2006, half of workers surveyed said they develop their best ideas at their desk. Today only 27 percent say that they developed their best ideas at their desk. With a workforce that is increasingly mobile, this is perhaps not very surprising. However, some of the other places to find inspiration might be.
Stress and anxiety at work
Workers are in better shape today than they were ten years ago. Five percent more employees cope with stress through exercise. On the other hand, 19 percent fewer employees cope with their work stress through eating today than ten years ago. Overall, this means that more people today manage their stress through exercise (38 percent) than through food (36 percent).
